I have been an idiot for most of my life, though I didn’t always realise it at the time. Although a bit of an introvert, I actually used to think I was quite smart.

After all, I could answer most of the questions correctly on the TV quiz shows before most of the contestants. Fair enough, I didn’t have to push a button to get in before the opponent, so I guess I had some advantage.

I had a stable job, that I kind of liked — at least some of the time. But, I moved around a lot as a relief worker, so some places were better than others. When I first started work it was like living a dream.

I wasn’t making huge money but it was the most I’d ever had and was more than I needed to get by. I was sharing a house with ex-school friends, and saving a lot, even though I was partying and drinking most weekends.

It occasionally crossed my mind to invest some money because I had actually excelled at “mock investing” in stocks and shares in Economics class at school, but I never took it into the real world. Oh, I did bet on horse racing now and then with some success, but that would be a losing endeavour over time … silly me, I said I was an idiot.
