Bang! Bang! The sound reverberated around the room as the cafe window was shattered.

Thank God, barely a second before, I had leaned back in my chair to retrieve the ringing phone from my pocket. That move probably saved my life, as the bullets passed just inches in front of my face and shattered a display jar of cookies on the store’s counter.

Instinctively, throwing myself to the floor amid shattered glass, I yelled at the phone, “Charlie!”

The caller remained silent, and panic ensued within Rita’s Cafe. The few other patrons raced to the opposite side of the room as far away from the window as possible as the owner frantically called the police.

I was about to put my phone away when the caller spoke, “This is not Charlie! You escaped this time, Jack Hansen, but you are still a dead man walking.”

I was in shock, as I looked up and saw Charlie walk through the door. Racing over to where I was crouched, he placed a hand on my shoulder, “Fuck, Jack are you okay?”
