Charlie had long coveted the title of “best-selling author.” He had been writing for years but nothing he’d written so far had made him rich or famous. “The Meaning of Death” may be his last chance, and he was proud of all the time and research he’d poured into it.

He hoped Jack hadn’t wasted all his time playing with Lucky, and had finished digitizing the draft, so he could submit it to his publisher straight away when he arrived home. It was already past the proposed deadline.
