Farewell Friend of Medium
It was good while it lasted
Well, after some procrastinating, I finally made the decision to cancel my Friend of Medium membership. As I pay monthly I will revert back to a basic monthly member from 20th February 2025.
I wasn’t quick to join FOM originally and didn’t until many of my colleagues had already done so, and espoused it as being the right thing to do to support other writers.
Though I was never 100% convinced that it would actually benefit anyone four times more than they would get if I was a basic member reading and commenting on their work, I decided that I was making enough each month that I could afford to give it a try. Any benefit to others would be better than nothing.
Things have changed drastically recently, however, and our Partner Program earnings have been reduced dramatically. In fact, they have crashed to levels not experienced by me since 2022, in about my third month as a Medium member.
Since early January 2025, we have been earning mere cents per article/story, and it is clear that no one is getting value from a $15.00 per month membership, neither writers nor readers.
I had made a pledge that if I made it to $50.00 for the month I would retain my FOM membership, but as I only managed to scrape my way to a few cents in excess…
