When he was 17 one of my son’s was charged with assault on another teenager. It was in retaliation to the theft and abuse of a dog, but the judge said, “That was only a dog. You assaulted a person.” I felt that was wrong, but anyway, fortunately he only received community service as punishment.

He had been living away from home at the time and had bad influences around him. After the court case he moved back home, and got back on the right path.
