I am sure you are finding life much more difficult in California. Even here in Australia the big cities are too expensive for accommodation that we chose to live in a small rural town. The mortgage payments here is much cheaper than rental prices per month in the cities.

You seem to be doing all the right things to save money and make life as good as possible.
