I don't know when it happened but seems to be a 21st Century thing. A number of publishers I sent poetry to have said they don't accept rhyming poems, and I have read a lot of comments on the internet that consider rhyming verse childish and forced. I grew up loving Dr Seuss and the like, so will always have a preference for rhyming poems.
