Many people misinterpret this to mean there were only a few seconds during which the Titanic might have been saved, but the truth is there were only a few seconds during which the Titanic might have been sunk. By reacting as they did when they did, the iceberg ended up tearing down nearly the entire length of the ship, opening enough of the ship’s watertight compartments to the sea to doom the Titanic.
