My First Job and Some More

Another One of Those Challenges

I have been challenged by two friends and fellow writers here Pamela Oglesby and Misbah Sheikh to write an article about my first job. Well, my first job didn’t last long so; I will write a little about my first ‘real’ job as well.

While I was in 10th grade at school, I was offered a part time job two days a week as an assistant and telegram boy at the small local post office. I basically sorted mail incoming and outgoing, place outgoing mail into cloth bags and sealed them with a metal tag and P. O’s wax seal.

I was also provided with an old company bicycle that I would use to personally deliver telegrams to people (this really shows my age) being before emails, the Internet etc. I only did this job for two or three months, the highlight being my encounters with a number of mailmen hating canine guardians.

I remember one particularly vicious dog (the only one to ever actually bite me) that jumped four time its own height as I was to place a letter in the mailbox and grabbed my hand. Though I am a dog lover, I haven’t really taken to Chihuahuas ever since.

My first real employment came within a couple of weeks of graduating from High School. Before we left school we were encouraged to apply for colleges or universities we’d like to attend or…
