My Porch: Photo by author

Back in 2019, on another website, I invited readers to give me ideas or subjects that they would like to see written as poems and said if the idea proved popular enough, I would turn it into a series.

I would write all these pieces of poetry while sitting on my back porch (hence the name of the series) and generally accompanied by my cats.

Well, somewhat surprisingly, it proved so popular that I published 69 editions of Poems from the Porch, which incorporated over 300 poems. The last one was published in October 2021, and I had intended to keep the series going but the abolition of commenting at that website unfortunately made it too hard to continue.

When considering names for this I thought: “Verandah Verse” but I looked up the definition of verandah and it said: “a roofed platform along the outside of a house, level with the ground floor.”

Whereas, porch is: “a covered entrance, or an outdoor seating area on a building or house. An example of a porch is a space to put chairs on which to sit outside during the summer.”

Non-poetry lovers may suggest I should have called this “Bullshit Balcony,” but, oh well, you can’t please…
