The Feline Five
A Poem Dedicated to My Five Cats
Response to Keeley Schroder’s April Poetry Challenge #28
Cats (and dogs) have always been a big part of my life. Of our present five cats, two of them Humphrey and Phoebe have been with us since they were born 14 years ago. Since then we have acquired three others (strays which adopted us) — Nike, Chairman Meow, and Toothless.
I have not dedicated much of my writing to them in the past, other than passing references in poems or articles, so it is about time I took a leaf out of one of my favourite writers Mark Twain’s book and wrote a piece specifically dedicated to them. Therefore, this poem is for my five cats. I hope they like it.
I simply can´t resist a cat, particularly a purring one. They are the cleanest, cunningest, and most intelligent things I know, outside of the girl you love, of course. — Mark Twain
The Feline Five
The Feline Five have superpowers,
They can tell time - they know the hours.
At 7.00 am and again at 4.00,
They’re meowing at the kitchen door.
