Thomas, this excellent poem reminds me of the song by Tom T Hall “Old Dogs and Children and Watermelon Wine.” I have had so many dogs pass away in my lifetime, and the older I get the more it makes me contemplate my own mortality. Last time I bought a young pup, as we usually adopt more mature dogs … but frequent passing is too hard to deal with.
